I am always looking for good volunteer opportunities for my family.  I have young kids and it’s really difficult to find something they can participate in.  Most activities or organizations need older children or won’t allow any children to help.  This weekend, I loaded up the kids and took them to the Mary Brennan Inn, in Hempstead, New York.

This is the largest soup kitchen on Long Island that serves over 500 people a day.  The Inn is only open Monday-Friday so they are always looking for volunteers during the weekends.  They were more than happy to have the kids come in on a Saturday or Sunday to help sort food, bag supplies and organize their donations.  Finally, a place where kids can actually help out!

The director recommended that my children do a basic drive in the neighborhood.  She felt the children learn more from collecting supplies than from helping in the center.  Together, with a bunch of volunteers, we came up with a hat and glove drive for this winter.

I’ll have my 3rd grader join with a few friends to create a flyer and drop it off in the neighbor’s mailboxes.  It won’t be large or bring in a ton of supplies, but my kids will be actively volunteering.  As much as I want to raise a huge supply of hats and gloves, I will be just as happy if my kids learn that they have to give back to the community.

Call your local soup kitchen or shelter and ask what supplies they need most.  I am sure they will be thrilled with any small amount of supplies you can gather and bring in.  Most of all, the kids will be working to help their neighbors.
